One Amazing Song

A slave trader encounters grace

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now am found
Was blind, but now I see

A troubled slave trader found his life transformed during a violent storm at sea. John Newton (1725-1807) was so gripped by the amazing grace of God that he left his old job on the slave ship and devoted his life to helping others find freedom in Christ. John studied Christian theology, became a pastor, tried his hand at poetry, and later in life wrote the world’s most recognizable hymn, Amazing Grace, as part of a New Year’s Day sermon.

Music critics describe the song Amazing Grace as a perfect marriage of words, images and melody. Written in 1773, the verses of this beloved hymn have offered - and still offer - hope, forgiveness, reassurance and comfort across the globe to this day. The song has been sung in churches, battlefields, movies, civil rights protests, funerals, inaugurations, commemorations and some of the most famous events on every continent. The simple and powerful lyrics, together with the singable, memorable melody have made Amazing Grace the most played, sung, recorded, and arguably the most loved song in history.

For these reasons and more, the Amazing Grace Experience (AGX2020) has chosen this musical treasure to be our theme song for events in 24 time zones on Pentecost Weekend 2020.
